Why we do what we do...

Did you know the Philippines is amongst the highest Vitamin A Deficient (VAD) developing countries in the world?

  • An estimated 250 million preschool children are vitamin A deficient.
  • An estimated 250,000 to 500,000 vitamin A-deficient children become blind every year, half of them dying within 12 months of losing their sight.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children and increases the risk of disease and death from severe infections. Maria & Joseph's Ministry to the Poor's vitamin A program is to eradicate childhood blindness caused by vitamin A deficiency. We know that in addition to preventing childhood blindness cause by VAD, vitamin A supplementation reduces child mortality in at-risk children by an average of 24%.

Crucial for maternal and child survival, supplying adequate vitamin A in high-risk areas can significantly reduce mortality.

MJMP's goal is a Philippine-wide elimination of vitamin A deficiency and its tragic consequences, including blindness, disease and premature death. To successfully combat VAD, short-term interventions and proper infant feeding must be backed up by long-term sustainable solutions, which includes a combination of breastfeeding and vitamin A supplementation, coupled with enduring solutions, and promotion of vitamin A-rich diets and food fortification.

Maria & Joseph's Ministry to the Poor is the lead field partner in the Philippines to Vitamin Angels (the leader in a world-wide effort to eliminate vitamin A deficiency).

Maria & Joseph's Ministry to the Poor is Building Up the lives of under-nourished children across the Philippines and today we are Reaching Out to you…We are asking for your help, please join us in combating VAD in the Philippines, donate today by clicking on the link below.
